Charging & costs

Why is my Nissan Leaf charging slowly?

Separate normal taper from supply limits, temperature and a charging problem—and compare the right power readings.

A charging screen shows a small number, but that number does not explain itself. Was the battery almost full? Is the charger limited? Are you comparing wall input with battery power? Before concluding that the battery has deteriorated, establish what is being measured and when.

Write down the conditions

Record the charge type, starting SOC, current SOC, pack temperature, charger or supply limit and the car’s actual specification. Include whether this is a repeatable change at the same charger. “It used to charge faster” becomes much easier to investigate when the two sessions can be compared.

The exact Leaf year, market and fitted charging equipment matter. Check the appropriate vehicle manual rather than assuming every Leaf shares the same AC or rapid-charging limits.

Near full: slowing down can be normal

Charging power can reduce as the battery approaches full. A time estimate based on a momentary early-session power reading may therefore be too optimistic. Nissan’s owner documentation describes charging time as dependent on battery and charging conditions; use it for the limits and warnings relevant to your vehicle.

Leaf Pro’s charging display includes a time-to-full estimate, not an appointment guarantee. If power changes, so can the estimate. Compare a session at a similar charge level before calling a slower final portion a new fault.

Check the supply and the car’s limit

A charging unit’s headline rating is a ceiling for the equipment, not a promise for every connected vehicle. The car, supply settings and charging conditions can impose lower limits. At home, check the configured current and any load-management setting through the charger’s proper controls. Do not change electrical installation limits without the appropriate professional advice.

Wall power and battery power are different

The charger may report power entering the vehicle, while an OBD app reports power at the battery. Conversion and other vehicle loads mean these values need not be identical. A difference is not automatically energy disappearing from the battery or a fault in the app.

Use units carefully. kW is power at a moment; kWh is energy over time. A low-power period can still add energy, and a brief high-power number does not show how much the whole session delivered.

Keep temperature in the record

Battery temperature is relevant context, particularly when comparing a cold start with a pack that has already been driven and charged. Leaf Pro shows the available pack sensors. Use the vehicle’s own warnings and charging instructions as the authority for safe operation, rather than trying to override protection behaviour.

When to investigate further

  • Charging fails to start or repeatedly stops with a warning.
  • A cable, connector or charger shows damage or an abnormal condition.
  • The same car and charger behave materially differently under similar conditions.
  • The vehicle displays an error that requires inspection.

Do not keep retrying a damaged connection. If the issue is reproducible, collect the session details and contact the charger operator or a qualified vehicle specialist as appropriate. The app’s record can help describe the problem; it cannot inspect the cable, test an electrical installation or certify a high-voltage component.

Make the next comparison useful

For the next normal session, note start and end charge, duration and the same source of energy measurement. Keep the surroundings comparable where practical. You will learn more from two well-described sessions than from a collection of unrelated peak-power screenshots.
